How to Defend Against Rallies in Last War: Survival

LW Spy · Independent fan website

Being the target of a rally in Last War: Survival can be devastating — especially if you are caught off-guard without proper defenses. While shields are the best protection, they are not always available. Understanding defensive tactics helps you survive attacks even when shielded defense is not an option.

Early Warning: Know When You Are Being Targeted

The first sign you are being targeted is often enemy scouts appearing near your base. If your alliance uses LW Spy, leaders can detect when enemy alliances are scanning your area. If you see your name appear in an enemy scan (shared via a mole or intelligence), immediately shield and alert your alliance.

Shield Management

The simplest defense is keeping a shield active. But shields cost resources and you cannot attack while shielded. The optimal strategy is to shield during high-risk periods (when enemy alliance is active, during events, overnight) and stay unshielded only when you are online and can react quickly. Use the Shield Tracker on your own alliance to enforce discipline.

Garrison Optimization

If you cannot shield, ensure your garrison is maximized. All available troops should be inside your base, not gathering or deployed elsewhere. Recall all marches if you detect incoming threats. Your wall defenses and hero skills should be optimized for defense — some players maintain a separate defense hero preset for exactly this situation.

Alliance Reinforcement

Request reinforcements from nearby alliance members immediately when threatened. The faster reinforcements arrive, the stronger your defense. This is why base positioning near your alliance matters — distant members cannot reinforce you in time. Use Discord to send urgent reinforcement requests that everyone sees immediately.

How Long is the Rally Window? Know Your March Times

A rally is not an instant event — it is a march that takes anywhere from 5 to 45 minutes depending on the attacker's distance and march-speed buffs. The closer the attacker, the less reaction time you get. The single most useful number to know is the minimum march time of your nearest enemy: a rally from a base 50 grids away with standard speed takes 30-45 minutes (plenty of warning), while a rally from 8 grids away with a march-speed hero arrives in 8-12 minutes (almost no warning). Run a Search scan filtered to your tile region every few days to map who has moved into rally range. If a previously-distant enemy suddenly relocates within 10 grids of your hive, your shield discipline must tighten immediately — you no longer have a comfortable warning buffer, and any unshielded gathering session becomes a target.

Shield vs Stronghold: Which Defense to Use When

Last War gives you two defensive postures and players routinely confuse them. A shield is binary: nothing hits you, but you cannot attack or gather either. A stronghold (Doomsday Castle / Glacial Palace upgrade) does not stop attacks — it absorbs them with garrisoned troops and gives a defense buff. The right choice depends on what is incoming. Against a single coordinated rally from a higher-power enemy, shield: there is no garrison setup that survives a 50% power-deficit fight. Against repeated small-scale plunder hits from solo raiders, stronghold + reinforcements: shielding wastes a one-day shield on a 2-minute fight, while a strong garrison repels the raider and may even kill enough of his troops to deter further attempts. The mistake is reflexive shielding for every threat — high-spend players burn through their shield inventory in a week and end up undefended exactly when a real rally lands.
