Base Positioning Strategy in Last War: Where to Place Your Base

LW Spy · Independent fan website

Base positioning in Last War: Survival is one of the most underrated strategic decisions. Your position on the map determines which resources you can gather efficiently, how quickly your alliance can reinforce you, and how vulnerable you are to enemy attacks. Most players pick a random spot and never think about it again. Strategic players use map intelligence to choose the optimal position.

Alliance Clustering

Your base should be close to your alliance members, but not too close. A tight cluster provides mutual defense (nearby members can reinforce quickly) but is vulnerable to area-effect attacks. A moderate cluster with bases 2-3 tiles apart provides the best balance. Use the Alliance Scanner to visualize your alliance positioning and identify members who are too isolated.

Resource Access

Position near high-level resource tiles that match your most-needed resource. Use the Map Scanner to identify resource tile locations and competition levels. Being close to resources reduces gathering travel time, which means more resources per hour and less time your troops spend vulnerable on the map.

Defensive Considerations

Avoid positioning on the edge of the map where you can be attacked from multiple directions. Ideal defensive positions have alliance members on multiple sides, creating a buffer. Use the Map Scanner to identify natural defensive positions — areas surrounded by alliance territory or geographic features.

Scouting Before Relocating

Before spending a relocation item, scan the destination area with LW Spy. Check who your new neighbors will be. Are they friendly, neutral, or hostile? Is the area contested? Are there active enemy alliances nearby? A bad relocation can put you in worse danger than your original position.

How to Move Your Base in Last War

Moving your base on the same warzone uses a Relocation item — distinct from a Server Transfer (which moves you between warzones entirely). Three relocation item types: (1) Random Relocation (free, given at low Furnace levels) drops you anywhere on the map; (2) Targeted Relocation (purchased with gems or earned from events) lets you pick exact (x, y) coordinates; (3) Alliance Territory Relocation (granted by alliance leadership) moves you adjacent to a chosen alliance member. The right type depends on the move: random for low-stakes shuffles, targeted for strategic positioning near a resource cluster or chokepoint, alliance for joining a tight cluster. Use the Map Scanner before applying a Targeted Relocation so you know exactly what occupies the destination and adjacent tiles.

Can You Move Buildings in Last War?

Buildings inside your base layout can be re-arranged at any time without cost — there is no item or cooldown for rearranging the internal grid. Drag any building to a new slot in build mode. The base footprint itself (the 3x3 city tile) cannot be moved without a Relocation item, but everything INSIDE that footprint is fully repositionable: you can reorganise barracks, hospitals, walls, and decoration without restrictions. The most common reason to rearrange is to optimise around new buildings unlocked at higher Furnace levels — the optimal layout at Furnace 15 is different from optimal at Furnace 25, so plan to re-shuffle every 3-5 Furnace upgrades.

Save Radar Tasks Before Relocating

Active radar tasks do NOT survive a base relocation — they get cancelled the moment your base moves and any in-progress timer is lost. Before applying a Relocation item, finish (or claim) any active radar tasks. The free relocation tokens granted at low levels are designed for early-game when radar tasks are short, so this rarely matters. The pain point is high-Furnace players using a Targeted Relocation mid-event: relocating during a radar task that was 80% complete forfeits the reward entirely. Plan relocations to land in the gap between radar task completions, not during one.
