Gathering in Last War: Survival is the act of sending a march of troops to a resource tile (food field, iron mine, oil rig, or gold cache) so they can occupy it and slowly collect resources over time. Gathering is the main income stream past the early game but it also puts your army outside the safety of your shielded base.
Resource tiles are scattered across the world map at fixed coordinates, with higher-level tiles concentrated farther from the centre. Each tile has a total resource pool (e.g. 5M food) and a per-hour gather rate. You select a tile, tap "Gather", choose the troops to send, and dispatch a march. When the march arrives, the troops occupy the tile and begin collecting resources at the tile's per-hour rate up to your march's carry capacity.
Each march can only occupy one tile at a time, and you have a hard cap on simultaneous marches (3-5 depending on your VIP level and research). When the carry cap fills (or the tile is depleted) the troops return home with the loot. You can recall a gathering march early if you need the troops for combat, but you lose any unhauled resources on the tile.
Gathering speed scales with your gathering research, the gathering hero buffs (heroes assigned as march commander give specific stat boosts), and any active gathering event buffs. A maxed gather build moves resources at 3-5x the base rate of a non-optimized build.
A gathering army is OUTSIDE your shield. Even if your base is shielded, the troops sitting on the resource tile can be attacked by any enemy on the warzone. This is the #1 source of troop losses in Last War — especially during Kill Events, when enemies actively hunt gathering armies for the easy kill points.
During KvK and Kill Events, the rule is no gathering. Veterans pause all gathering for the duration of the active war window, eat the resource opportunity cost, and queue heavy gathering immediately after the event closes. The few hours of lost gathering income is cheap compared to the cost of replacing a 500K-troop army.
During peacetime, gathering is the bulk of your daily resource income. Smart players stage gathering marches near alliance territory (under turret protection), at high-level tiles inside the alliance flag radius, and at coordinates where alliance members can reinforce if attacked.
Gathering is the main income stream past base level 20. Before that, base production (internal farm/mine buildings inside the city) outpaces gathering because your gathering troops aren't strong enough yet. Past level 20, the inverse holds — base production hits a soft cap and outdoor gathering becomes 60-80% of total daily resource intake.
Hero dispatch missions are a complement, not a replacement — they reward smaller chunks of resources for shorter time investments and don't require army deployment. The two together cover daily resource needs without forcing you to gather 24/7.
High-level tiles (L5, L6) give the best per-hour rates but they're contested — every active alliance is competing for the same nodes. Mid-level tiles (L3, L4) inside your alliance territory are usually the right balance of efficiency and safety.
The LW Spy troops scanner shows every gathering army on the warzone — useful both offensively (find enemy gather camps to raid) and diplomatically (see which alliances are camped on your tiles before declaring territorial disputes).
Now that you know what gathering is, scan the warzone and see it live. LW Spy gives you real-time data on every base.
